How to Spend an Overnight at Ocean Cay: My Perfect 2-Day Itinerary

How to Spend an Overnight at Ocean Cay
If your MSC cruise includes an overnight at Ocean Cay, don’t treat it like a normal cruise port day.
That extra evening changes the entire experience!
Instead of trying to squeeze the beaches, food, lighthouse and island into a few hours, you can slow down, return to the ship when you want, and then come back out to experience Ocean Cay after sunset.
I’ve been to Ocean Cay several times, and if I were planning the perfect Ocean Cay overnight itinerary, this is exactly how I would spend my time.
The best part of an Ocean Cay overnight is that you don’t have to rush.
Why an Ocean Cay Overnight Is Different
Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is MSC Cruises’ private island in The Bahamas, and unlike destinations where you have to tender ashore, MSC ships dock directly at the island.
That makes coming and going extremely easy.
MSC also allows guests to return to the ship throughout the visit, which is one of the biggest advantages of an overnight. You can spend the day on the beach, head back onboard for dinner or a shower, and then walk right back onto the island for sunset and the nighttime activities.
That flexibility is exactly how I would take advantage of it.
| Time | What I Would Do |
|---|---|
| Morning | Lighthouse Bay Beach |
| Lunch | Eat on the island |
| Afternoon | Lighthouse Bar and more beach time |
| Early Evening | Return to the ship for dinner |
| Sunset | Sunset Beach |
| Night | Explore Ocean Cay and watch the lighthouse show |
| Day 2 | Relaxing beach morning before returning to the ship |
Day 1: Start at Lighthouse Bay Beach

The first place I would head after getting off the ship is Lighthouse Bay Beach.
It’s close to the pier, easy to reach and gives you one of the best views of Ocean Cay’s red-and-white lighthouse!
I like starting here because it immediately feels like Ocean Cay. You have the lighthouse in front of you, the ship nearby and plenty of places to relax along the water.
There’s no need to rush across the island first thing in the morning.
Grab a chair, get in the water and enjoy the fact that you have the rest of the day and night ahead of you.
Grab Lunch on Ocean Cay
Once I’ve had enough beach time, I would stay on the island for lunch.
There are several complimentary places to eat around Ocean Cay, including buffet-style dining and casual food truck style options.
Seakers Food Court is one of the easiest choices if you want a traditional lunch with options like barbecue, burgers, salads and other casual food.
I wouldn’t spend too much time on lunch, though.
For me, Ocean Cay is about being outside, so I would eat, cool off for a little while and then head back toward the lighthouse.
Spend the Afternoon at Lighthouse Bar
After lunch, my next stop would be Lighthouse Bar.
It sits right beside Ocean Cay’s lighthouse, so you get one of the most recognizable views on the island while having a drink.
If you have MSC’s Premium Extra Drink Package, MSC currently allows those beverage benefits to extend onto Ocean Cay, although the selection available ashore can differ from what you’ll find onboard.
This is one of those places where I don’t necessarily need an activity planned.
I’m perfectly happy grabbing a drink, finding somewhere comfortable and enjoying the view with some live music!
Go Back to the Ship for Dinner
This might be my biggest tip for an Ocean Cay overnight:
I would go back to the ship for dinner.
That might sound strange when you have an entire private island outside, but one of the benefits of Ocean Cay is how easy it is to move between the island and your ship.
After spending most of the day in the sun, I like the idea of walking back onboard, showering, changing and having a proper dinner in the Main Dining Room or somewhere else on the ship.
Then I would head right back outside.
You’re not ending your Ocean Cay day.
You’re just taking a break before the best part.
Head to Sunset Beach Before Dark

Once dinner is over, I would head back onto Ocean Cay and start walking toward Sunset Beach.
This is the beach on the western side of the island that I always think of when I picture slowing down at Ocean Cay.
MSC describes Sunset Beach as the island’s longest beach and specifically recommends it for watching the sunset.
And the name is pretty accurate.
This is also where I like to look for one of the hammocks around this side of the island when they’re available.
There is something completely different about Ocean Cay late in the day.
The heat starts disappearing, many guests have already gone back to the ship and everything feels quieter.
If you have an overnight stop, I would not rush back onboard before sunset.
This is exactly why having the extra time matters.
Explore Ocean Cay After Dark
After sunset, I would simply walk around.
Ocean Cay at night feels very different from Ocean Cay during the middle of the day.
The lighthouse is illuminated, the pathways are lit and you can actually enjoy being outside without the midday Bahamian sun.
Depending on the sailing, MSC may also offer nighttime activities including music, beach parties, stargazing or illuminated water activities.
You don’t necessarily need to book anything.
For me, simply having the opportunity to walk around an MSC private island at night is part of the experience.
Don't Miss the Ocean Cay Lighthouse Show

Of course, I would finish the night with the Ocean Cay lighthouse show.
MSC’s lighthouse uses LED lighting synchronized with music, transforming the entire lighthouse after dark.
This is one of those Ocean Cay experiences that you simply can’t get on every itinerary because you need to be there late enough to see the island after dark.
I would find a spot around Lighthouse Bay Beach, grab a drink if I wanted one and enjoy the show before eventually heading back to the ship.
It’s the perfect way to end the first day.
Day 2: Don't Overplan It
The next morning, I would do almost the complete opposite of Day 1.
I wouldn’t make a detailed schedule.
I would get off the ship, pick a beach and relax.
After already seeing the lighthouse, exploring the island, watching the sunset and experiencing Ocean Cay at night, the second morning is when I would actually slow down.
Swim. Find a chair. Sit under a palm tree. Walk along the beach.
That’s it.
Which Ocean Cay Beach Should You Choose on Day 2?
There isn’t really one “best” beach at Ocean Cay because they each feel a little different.
If I wanted convenience, I would stay closer to Lighthouse Bay Beach or the beaches around the central part of the island.
If I wanted to explore somewhere different, I might head farther out toward Bimini Beach.
North and South Beach are also good options if you want calmer lagoon-style swimming.
The important thing is that I wouldn’t spend my second morning racing between beaches just so I could say I saw all of them.
Ocean Cay is much better when you actually stop and enjoy it.
Do You Need an Excursion at Ocean Cay?
Personally, I don’t think you need one.
MSC offers activities such as lighthouse climbs, snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking and other excursions, and some of those can absolutely be worth doing if they interest you.
But an Ocean Cay overnight is one of the rare cruise stops where I think doing less can actually make the day better.
There are beaches to explore, places to get food and drinks, sunset, nighttime entertainment and the lighthouse show without needing to fill every hour with a paid activity.
If it’s your first visit, I would leave yourself plenty of unscheduled time.

Is an Overnight at Ocean Cay Worth It?
Absolutely.
I actually think an overnight is one of the best ways to experience Ocean Cay.
A normal port day can make you feel like you need to choose between relaxing and exploring. With an overnight, you can do both.
You can spend hours at the beach without worrying that you’re wasting your limited time. You can go back to the ship for dinner and return afterward. You can watch the sunset without checking your watch every five minutes.
And most importantly, you get to experience Ocean Cay after dark.
That changes the entire feel of the island.
Ocean Cay Overnight: Frequently Asked Questions
