A French Caribbean island of rainforest, rum, black sand and a famous volcano, with a lively capital right by the pier.

Fort-de-France is the capital of Martinique, an overseas region of France in the Eastern Caribbean. Ships dock at terminals near the city center, with downtown a short walk or taxi ride away.
Martinique has a real French flavor, with pastries, rhum agricole and Creole cooking. It suits travelers who love food, gardens and dramatic scenery, especially the mountainous, rainforest-covered north.

Here are my favorite ways to spend a cruise day in Fort-De-France. Each one opens on Viator, where you can check the times, reviews and price before you book.

Take the mythical Route de la Trace surrounded by lush vegetation, walk in the rainforest, swim under the refreshing waterfall, and discover the Pelee mountain mixed with the tragic history of Saint-Pierre and you will taste the best AOC rum in the world!

Best time of the year to cruise! I love spending the holidays cruising with my family! The ships are beautifully decorated, and ringing in New Year’s Eve at sea is an experience I’ll never forget!

My favorites: visit Saint-Pierre and see the ruins left by the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelee; wander the tropical paths of the Jardin de Balata botanical garden; see the Schoelcher Library and St. Louis Cathedral in downtown Fort-de-France; tour a rum distillery to taste Martinique's rhum agricole, made from fresh sugarcane juice; relax on the white sand of Les Salines beach in the south.

Downtown Fort-de-France is a short walk or taxi ride from the pier, and tours or taxis are best for the rest of the island.
