Carnival vs. Royal Caribbean: Which Cruise Line Is Better in 2027?

Carnival vs. Royal Caribbean: Which Cruise Line Is Better in 2027?
If you're planning a cruise vacation, chances are you've considered two of the biggest names in cruising: Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean!
But which cruise line is actually better? Is Carnival cheaper than Royal Caribbean? Which has better food? Which cruise line is best for families? And is Royal Caribbean worth the extra money?
These are questions I get ALL the time!
After sailing 37 cruises across several cruise lines, including numerous sailings with both Carnival and Royal Caribbean, I can tell you one thing: There are things I absolutely LOVE about both cruise lines!
As the owner of Caribbean Breeze Travel and a cruise specialist with over 11 years of experience, I've had the opportunity to experience everything from Carnival's traditional ships to Royal Caribbean's incredible Icon Class.
And here's something I've learned over the years: The biggest, newest, and most expensive cruise ship isn't always the best vacation for everyone!
Let's break down where I think each cruise line shines, where they could improve, and which one might be the better fit for YOUR next vacation!

1. Carnival vs. Royal Caribbean Food: Which Has Better Dining?
Let's start with one of my FAVORITE parts of cruising... THE FOOD!
One thing I've consistently praised Carnival for is its incredible variety of complimentary dining options, particularly on its newer Excel Class ships.
On ships like Carnival Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee, there are so many places to grab a bite without spending extra money.
Some of my favorite Carnival dining options include:
- Guy's Burger Joint: Some of the best burgers at sea!
- BlueIguana Cantina: Fantastic tacos and burritos, especially for breakfast.
- Big Chicken: Delicious chicken sandwiches and comfort food.
- Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse: A great option for barbecue lovers.
- Street Eats: Fun, rotating street-food-inspired offerings.
- Cucina del Capitano: Italian dining with complimentary options on select ships and sailings.
- Chibang!: A fun combination of Asian and Mexican-inspired dishes, with complimentary dining opportunities on select sailings.
Complimentary availability, menus, and charges may vary by ship and sailing.
What I love about Carnival is that you don't always have to sit down for a traditional meal. There are so many quick, casual, and genuinely GOOD options throughout the ship.
And Carnival's specialty dining is generally pretty reasonably priced compared with Royal Caribbean.
Now, I have to give Royal Caribbean some serious credit here!
When I sailed Star of the Seas in December 2025, I was incredibly impressed with its complimentary dining choices.
Pearl Café quickly became one of my favorite spots onboard. Having a 24-hour café available is fantastic! I also appreciated the variety at AquaDome Market, Windjammer, Park Café, and Surfside Eatery.

Royal Caribbean has really stepped up its complimentary dining offerings on its newer ships.
My Winner: Carnival! I think Carnival continues to lead when it comes to the variety and value of casual complimentary dining. However, Royal Caribbean's Icon Class is definitely giving Carnival some serious competition!
2. Entertainment: Does Carnival or Royal Caribbean Have Better Shows?
This is one category where I think Royal Caribbean really separates itself from the competition.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Royal Caribbean consistently delivers some of the BEST entertainment at sea!
My experience aboard Star of the Seas is a perfect example.
The Back to the Future production was absolutely phenomenal! It was genuinely one of the best shows I've experienced, even compared with entertainment on land.
And then there's Torque, the AquaTheater show.
WOW!!
I considered it the best AquaTheater show I'd experienced at sea!
Royal Caribbean has invested heavily in elaborate entertainment venues, Broadway-style productions, ice skating shows, high-diving performances, and impressive technology.
Carnival, on the other hand, offers a different type of entertainment experience.
Between Playlist Productions, comedy clubs, live music, deck parties, and interactive games, Carnival creates an incredibly fun atmosphere.
And sometimes, I actually prefer that!
There's something about walking around a Carnival ship and finding something fun happening almost everywhere you turn.
My Winner: Royal Caribbean! If you're looking for spectacular, large-scale entertainment productions, Royal Caribbean is hard to beat. Carnival, however, excels at creating a fun and lively atmosphere throughout the ship.

3. Pools and Outdoor Spaces: Which Cruise Line Is Better?
Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer fantastic pool decks, but I think Royal Caribbean has really raised the bar with its newer ships.
One thing that impressed me tremendously about Star of the Seas was how well the ship accommodated so many passengers.
Despite its enormous size, it rarely felt overwhelmingly crowded during my sailing.
With multiple pools, family-friendly areas, relaxing spaces, and adults-only retreats, Royal Caribbean does an excellent job giving guests different environments to enjoy.
The Hideaway, with its beautiful infinity pool, was one of my favorite areas onboard!

Carnival's Excel Class ships also offer great outdoor spaces, including their main pool decks, aft pool areas, and Serenity adults-only retreats.
I particularly enjoy Carnival's casual poolside atmosphere, although some of its pool areas can become quite busy on sea days.
Of course, that can happen on Royal Caribbean, too!
My Winner: Royal Caribbean! Especially on the Icon Class, I think Royal Caribbean wins for pool variety, innovative design, and the number of outdoor spaces available.
4. Carnival vs. Royal Caribbean Activities: Which Has More Things to Do?
If you're looking for a cruise ship with an almost unbelievable number of activities, Royal Caribbean is tough to beat!
Depending on the ship, you can experience some pretty incredible attractions.
Royal Caribbean activities may include:
- FlowRider surf simulators
- Rock climbing walls
- Ice skating rinks
- Zip lines
- Water parks and thrilling waterslides
- Laser tag
- Bumper cars
- Family-friendly activity neighborhoods
Royal Caribbean has essentially turned some of its ships into floating vacation destinations!
But Carnival has some excellent attractions of its own.
I've loved seeing Carnival continue to innovate with features like BOLT, the roller coaster at sea, along with WaterWorks water parks and other family-friendly attractions.
However, Carnival's biggest strength isn't necessarily having the most elaborate attractions.
It's the atmosphere, interactive entertainment, and overall FUN experience.
My Winner: Royal Caribbean! If your family loves exciting attractions and having endless things to do, Royal Caribbean has the advantage, particularly on its newest ships.
5. Which Is Better for Families: Carnival or Royal Caribbean?
This is one of the questions I hear most often from families planning their first cruise.
And the answer might surprise you!
Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean are excellent choices for families with kids and teenagers.
Carnival offers Camp Ocean, Circle C, and Club O2, giving children and teenagers opportunities to meet other guests their age and enjoy supervised, age-appropriate activities.
Add in the waterslides, casual dining, pools, comedy, and interactive entertainment, and Carnival can be an outstanding family vacation.
And often at a very reasonable price!
Royal Caribbean takes things a step further on its largest ships.
The Icon Class was designed with families in mind, offering impressive attractions and multiple neighborhoods catering to different ages.
One thing I especially appreciated about Star of the Seas was how well it accommodated families, couples, and adults traveling without children.
There really was something for everyone!
| Family Vacation Category | My Pick |
|---|---|
| Families on a tighter budget | Carnival |
| Families with younger children | Both are excellent |
| Families with teenagers | Royal Caribbean |
| Water parks and major attractions | Royal Caribbean |
| Complimentary casual dining | Carnival |
| Large-scale family entertainment | Royal Caribbean |
| Fun, relaxed family atmosphere | Carnival |
My Winner: It depends on your family!
For families wanting maximum attractions and activities, I lean toward Royal Caribbean.
For families looking for a fun, affordable, and memorable vacation, Carnival can be an incredible value.
And remember, the individual ship matters just as much as the cruise line!

6. Carnival Celebration Key vs. Royal Caribbean Perfect Day at CocoCay
Now THIS is a comparison I love talking about!
I've had the opportunity to experience both Carnival's Celebration Key and Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay.
And honestly? They're both fantastic!
What I Love About Carnival Celebration Key
I was fortunate enough to experience Celebration Key during its early opening period, and I was extremely impressed!
In fact, I rated the destination 10/10 overall!
The enormous freshwater lagoons were incredible.
Starfish Lagoon, the family-friendly lagoon, was easily one of my favorite parts of the destination.
I gave it an 11/10!
I also appreciated the overall resort-style atmosphere and how much there was to enjoy without purchasing additional experiences.
Carnival has done a fantastic job creating different environments for different types of cruisers.
What I Love About Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay
CocoCay is also one of my favorite cruise destinations!
Royal Caribbean has created an outstanding combination of beautiful beaches, freshwater pools, exciting attractions, and relaxing spaces.
One thing I particularly appreciate about CocoCay is the convenience of its included amenities.
On my Star of the Seas cruise, I was especially impressed with the complimentary buffet.
It was one of the best private-destination buffets I've experienced!
And yes... you absolutely need to try the brownies!
For guests looking for more excitement, CocoCay also offers a water park and additional experiences for an extra charge.
My Winner: It's a TIE! Celebration Key has incredible freshwater lagoons and a beautiful resort atmosphere, while CocoCay offers fantastic beaches, pools, activities, and included amenities.

7. Which Cruise Line Has Better Ships and Less Crowding?
One thing I've learned after sailing so many cruises is that a ship's passenger capacity doesn't tell the whole story.
A cruise ship can carry thousands of passengers and still feel comfortable if it's designed properly.
Royal Caribbean's Icon Class is a fantastic example.
When I sailed Star of the Seas, I was amazed at how well the different neighborhoods, restaurants, entertainment venues, and outdoor spaces distributed guests around the ship.
For a ship that size, it was surprisingly easy to find areas that didn't feel overly crowded.
Carnival's Excel Class ships are also impressive, with multiple neighborhoods and a great variety of dining and entertainment options.
On my February 2026 sailing aboard Carnival Mardi Gras, I gave the ship an overall rating of 8/10 following its dry dock.
I enjoyed that cruise, although it didn't quite reach the level of my Star of the Seas experience.
My Winner: Royal Caribbean! Particularly on the Icon Class, Royal Caribbean gets the edge for ship design and crowd management based on my personal experiences.
8. Is Carnival Cheaper Than Royal Caribbean? Which Offers Better Value?
Let's talk about something that matters to just about everyone...
THE PRICE!
One of the biggest questions I receive is whether Carnival is cheaper than Royal Caribbean.
And while pricing changes depending on the ship, itinerary, sailing date, stateroom, and promotions, Carnival often offers a lower starting price and excellent overall value.
This is especially true when comparing some of Carnival's ships against Royal Caribbean's newest mega-ships.
But here's something I always remind my clients:
The cheapest cruise isn't necessarily the BEST value!
You also need to consider what's included and what you might spend once onboard.
When comparing Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise prices, I recommend looking at:
- The total cruise fare: Compare the full price, including taxes, fees, and port expenses.
- The ship you're sailing: A newer ship with more attractions may justify a higher fare.
- Complimentary dining: Consider how much you may want to spend on specialty restaurants.
- Drink packages: Compare beverage package prices and what's included.
- Internet packages: Wi-Fi costs can make a difference, especially for families.
- Shore excursions: Factor in the activities you plan to enjoy in each port.
- Stateroom options: Compare cabin location, size, and category before deciding.
One thing I love about Carnival is how many great experiences are already included in the fare.
Royal Caribbean can certainly cost more on its newest ships, but those ships also deliver some pretty incredible attractions, entertainment, and amenities.
My Winner: Carnival! Carnival often wins when it comes to affordability and overall value. However, Royal Caribbean can absolutely justify the additional cost for travelers who want its newest ships and spectacular attractions.
9. Carnival vs. Royal Caribbean Atmosphere: Two Very Different Experiences!
This might actually be the biggest difference between the two cruise lines!
Carnival has a casual, lively, and social atmosphere.
There's something about Carnival that just feels FUN!
Whether it's grabbing a burger at Guy's, enjoying live music, attending a comedy show, or relaxing by the pool, Carnival has a very approachable vacation atmosphere.
Royal Caribbean, especially on its newer ships, feels more like a large-scale resort experience.
The ships are impressive, the entertainment is spectacular, and there's an incredible amount to explore.
Neither atmosphere is necessarily better.
It really comes down to what kind of vacation you're looking for!
10. Carnival vs. Royal Caribbean: My Overall Comparison
| Category | My Winner |
|---|---|
| Complimentary dining and casual food | Carnival |
| Entertainment and production shows | Royal Caribbean |
| Pools and outdoor spaces | Royal Caribbean |
| Onboard attractions and activities | Royal Caribbean |
| Family attractions | Royal Caribbean |
| Private destinations | Tie |
| Ship design and crowd management | Royal Caribbean |
| Affordability and overall value | Carnival |
| Casual, lively atmosphere | Carnival |
Looking at that comparison, Royal Caribbean wins more individual categories.
But that doesn't automatically mean it's the better cruise line!
If great food, excellent value, and a fun atmosphere are your priorities, Carnival could very easily be the better vacation for you.
And that's exactly why I love helping people compare cruise lines before booking!
Frequently Asked Questions About Carnival vs. Royal Caribbean
Is Carnival or Royal Caribbean better for first-time cruisers?
Both are excellent choices for first-time cruisers! Carnival is a great option for travelers looking for a fun atmosphere and excellent value. Royal Caribbean is ideal for those interested in impressive entertainment, activities, and resort-style ships.
My recommendation is to compare specific ships rather than selecting a cruise line based solely on its name.
Which cruise line has better food, Carnival or Royal Caribbean?
Personally, I give Carnival the edge for its variety of casual complimentary dining options, especially on its Excel Class ships.
However, Royal Caribbean has significantly improved its dining options on newer ships like Star of the Seas.
Is Royal Caribbean worth the extra money?
It absolutely can be!
If you're looking for Broadway-style shows, unique onboard attractions, elaborate pool areas, and innovative ship designs, Royal Caribbean's newer ships may be worth the additional cost.
But if your priorities are great food, a fun atmosphere, and an affordable vacation, Carnival may offer better value.
Is Carnival or Royal Caribbean better for kids and teenagers?
Both cruise lines have excellent youth programs and family-friendly activities.
I generally give Royal Caribbean the advantage for families with teenagers who enjoy exciting attractions, particularly on its largest ships.
Carnival is also a fantastic choice for families looking for a fun, relaxed, and often more affordable cruise.
Which is better, Carnival Mardi Gras or Royal Caribbean Star of the Seas?
I've sailed both ships, and they offer very different experiences!
I rated Carnival Mardi Gras an 8/10 on my February 2026 sailing and Star of the Seas a 10/10 on my December 2025 sailing.
Star of the Seas particularly impressed me with its entertainment, ship design, and variety of spaces.
However, Carnival Mardi Gras continues to offer fantastic complimentary dining and a fun, lively atmosphere.
Your best choice ultimately depends on your budget and the vacation experience you're looking for.
My Final Verdict: Carnival or Royal Caribbean?
Here's where I might surprise you!
I genuinely love BOTH cruise lines.
Carnival has always been one of my favorites because of its fantastic complimentary dining, lively atmosphere, and overall value.
But Royal Caribbean has absolutely blown me away on some of my recent sailings.
In fact, my December 2025 cruise aboard Star of the Seas earned a 10/10 overall rating and became one of my favorite cruise experiences ever!
That doesn't mean I think every Royal Caribbean cruise is better than every Carnival cruise.
Far from it!
I've sailed Carnival ships that I absolutely loved, and I've experienced Royal Caribbean ships where certain things didn't quite meet my expectations.
For me, the individual ship matters just as much as the cruise line.
There is no single best cruise line for everyone. There's only the best cruise line for YOU!
If you're looking for excellent value, fantastic casual dining, and a fun atmosphere, Carnival might be the perfect fit.
If you're looking for spectacular entertainment, cutting-edge ships, thrilling attractions, and a resort-style vacation, Royal Caribbean may be worth spending a little extra.
And honestly, you really can't go wrong with either when you choose the right ship for your vacation style!
